Monday 3rd - Wagatabon Trays with Rabea Ferber

€100.00
COMING SOON

Wagatabon wooden trays originally made by the roof shingle makers of Wagatani Village in Japan have a very distinctive feel to them. In their off-season, Wagatani's shingle makers used green chestnut wood to make trays with distinctive hand-carved grooves. The village of Wagatani was flooded by a dam in 1965 and the tradition of making these trays disappeared with it.

Few have revived the craft, and Shinichi Moriguchi Sensei is one of the most prominent masters currently practising and teaching the art of Wagatabon. I have had the pleasure of studying with him for years and have his blessing to pass on my knowledge to you.

In 1 day, we will be able to make a small serving tray, starting from pre cut shingles. As well as learning how to actually carve the tray using Japanese chisels, we will also talk about the best grain orientation and layout and finish the piece using Japanese planes. You will leave with all the knowledge you need to make your own Wagatabon from a fresh tree. Carrying on this dying tradition.

Tools: Participants will be provided with all the necessary tools.

Material fee: 10-20€ - as this is a 1 day class the wood pieces will be prepared for students to start carving. A more specific price will be determined before the festival.

Skill Level/Prerequisite’s: Open to all levels tho some prior experience with wood can help.

Minimum age: 16 years old

Workshops start after our morning circle around 9:30 am and end around 5 or 6 pm.

Rabea speaks German & English.

If language is a barrier we are confident you will learn even if you speak or understand broken English. So much of the learning depends on seeing, feeling, and hearing the sounds as well.

IMPORTANT- Festival Tickets are booked separately and in addition to workshops. Please be sure you have booked your ticket before booking workshops!
