Monday 3rd PM - Preparing Cellulose Fibres (Mordanting Cotton & Linen) Dying with Kasper & Jolinde
A hands-on foundation workshop focused on preparing cellulose fibres for natural dyeing. Before colour can take hold, fibres must be properly prepared — and this workshop is dedicated entirely to that essential process.
Working with tannin and alum, participants will learn how mordants bond with plant-based textiles such as cotton and linen, creating the chemical bridge that allows natural dyes to adhere richly and last. You’ll mordant your own fabric samples and create small test pieces using steam to explore how fibres react at each stage — building the kind of practical understanding that makes all the difference when you move into dyeing.
Participants are welcome to bring their own plant-based textiles to mordant (max. 200g). All materials are provided for those who don’t.
Please note: this workshop does not result in a finished dyed piece. It is a dedicated deep-dive into the preparation process — the foundation that every great naturally dyed textile is built on. Textiles prepared here can be brought to our dyeing workshop on Tuesday afternoon, where the colour work begins.
This workshop is ideal for those who want to understand and experience the full natural dyeing process from start to finish.
What to bring: Please bring
Material Cost: 5-10€ paid directly to Kasper & Jolinde on site. If you bring your own textile then the cost is 5€.
