Thursday 6th - Balancing Coffee Scoops with Samuel Alexander
This one-day course will take you through a step by step approach to carving coffee scoops that have a fun, playful aesthetic. The outcomes balance, dance and spin on the ball of the bottom of the bowl, elevating the handle from a flat surface, adding animation to the inanimate object.
Together, we will begin from a split log to final scoop using an axe, adze, twca cam/loop knife and carving knife. The course will cover methods of how one can work to specific measurements whilst working freely and sculpturally.
“I first made one of these three years ago and I still use it daily and I love how it greets me in the morning when it is coffee time. I have been drawn to making it again and again and find that I capture something new in every one each time. When teaching this course, I am always blown away with the different sizes and styles of the scoops that are made when seeing them all having a little wiggle and dance together at the end.”
The learnings from this course, especially the twca cam style carving movements are aimed at those who want to add something new to elevate their spoon carving skills. The knowledge can also be applied to not only spoon carving, but also to further bowl and cup projects.
The scoop outcome can be adapted slightly on the course for those who may wish to create a tiny cup.
This is aimed at those who may have prior spoon carving experience. All hollowing tools are provided, but participants may need to bring their own axe and knife. I can bring axes and knives if needed with prior notice.
Tools: Participants will be provided with hollowing tools but will need to bring their own axe and a sharp carving knife, if they do not have this, I can bring some with prior notice. Please get in touch if you don’t have or can’t bring your own tools - info@vonhandfestival.com
Skill Level/Prerequisite’s: Prior carving experience necessary.
