Lieuwe Jongsma is often found working with green wood, but leatherworking has been a regular part of his practice for many years. He learned to make these sandals in 2016 from the Canadian sandalmaker Keith Gage-Cole. Sandalmaking with vegetable-tanned leather is a practical project to learn the craft. In this workshop, Lieuwe covers all the basic techniques, from cutting the leather and stitching to burnishing the edges. The workshop is great for absolute beginners or slightly more advanced leatherworkers who want to get into making sandals. It is a good feeling to walk in footwear you made yourself, ready for many sunny seasons.
Material costs: 60€ for all materials. We recognize this is a high price. The course has been shortened to fit the festival, which requires some extra parts being prepared for you.
All necessary tools will be supplied during the class.
Skill Level/Prerequisite’s: Open to All Levels
Minimum age: 14 year’s old
Workshops start after our morning circle around 9:30 am and end around 5 or 6 pm.
Lieuwe speaks Dutch and English.
If language is a barrier we are confident you will learn even if you speak or understand broken English. So much of the learning depends on seeing, feeling, and hearing the sounds as well.
