Wednesday 6th PM - Handled/Eared Bowls (Intermediate Workshop) with Jero Lehr
Anyone looking at the fascinating products of historical bowl turners will not fail to notice the many different shapes of bowls with handles, corners or ears, like the well known swedish snibbskål. They are not only beautiful to look at, but also practical for holding the bowl.
The handles are formed from one piece with the bowl and the blank is trimmed accordingly. Special skill is required when turning the handles or ears, as the tool does not cut continuously, but passes an empty space between the handles so that they appear half-invisible when turned.
This course is therefore expressly only suitable for those who have already turned at least two to five bowls on the pole lathe or who feel confident with the precise handling of the turning hook tools.
The area between the handles or ears is then smoothed with a hatchet (if necessary) and a carving knife.
You can choose whether you want to make a bowl with one handle, two handles or with four ears.
Skill Level/Prerequisite’s: Open to those with some turning experience. If you are unsure if you qualify please get in touch.
Minimum age: 16 years old.
Material costs: 5-10€ to be paid directly to Von Hand Organizers to cover the cost of wood and tool use.
Afternoon workshops start following lunch at 2 pm and end around 5 or 6pm.
The workshop will be taught in English & German.
If language is a barrier we are confident you will learn even if you speak or understand broken English. So much of the learning depends on seeing, feeling, and hearing the sounds as well.
IMPORTANT- Festival Tickets are booked separately and in addition to workshops. Please be sure you have booked your ticket before booking workshops!
