Mon 4th-Tuesday 5th - Beginners Bowl Turning with Jero Lehr & Nico de Wispelaere
In this two days bowl turning class for beginners, you will learn every step needed to produce your own wooden bowl, made on the traditional foot-powered pole lathe.
The main focus of this class will be the turning process from roughing out, shaping and finishing the outside, to hollowing your bowl until the core can be split or broken off. You will learn the different cuts, positions and angles for using the hook tools, which is the most important skill, as well as how to sharpen them.
You will also learn to position, split and mark your bowl blank in a piece of green wood, and shape it with an axe. When a mandrel is inserted, around which the cord is wrapped, the blank can be turned back and forth between two fixed centers - a fascinatingly simple, but once learned a very efficient technique.
At the end, you will be taught what you need to know about drying, oiling and using wooden tableware.
This course is taught by two instructors. Gleaning information from two very skilled turners; it will be a unique experience you don’t want to miss.
No prior experience needed. This workshop will still be beneficial for those with some experience as well.
Minimum age: 16 years old
Material costs: 5-10€ to be paid directly to Von Hand Organizers to cover the cost of wood.
If you have your own Axe, spoon knife or turning hooks please bring them. All other tools and materials will be provided.
Workshops start after our morning circle around 9:30 am and end around 5 or 6 pm.
Jero speaks German & English.
Nico speaks Dutch, Flemish, & English.
If language is a barrier we are confident you will learn even if you speak or understand broken English. So much of the learning depends on seeing, feeling, and hearing the sounds as well.
IMPORTANT- Festival Tickets are booked separately and in addition to workshops. Please be sure you have booked your ticket before booking workshops!
