Tues 5th, Thurs 7th & Friday 8th (Half day**) - Sheep Skin Tanning with Maria Buitenhuis
Note:This workshop takes place Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday. You are welcome to take another course on Wednesday if you would like.
Come learn the ancient art of natural hide tanning! This is a skill all our ancestors carried, being essential to life for clothing, bedding and making other utilitarian and ceremonial items. At the end of this 3 day class you will come away with a beautiful cosy sheepskin rug and the skills for tanning any animal hide with hair/wool left on using the fat tanning method, learning the stages of washing, scraping, racking & drying, egging to stretching and smoking.
Please note that this is a visceral class and takes some physical strength and determination, but highly rewarding and accessible to anyone who wants to learn.
Tuesday Day 1: Fleshing & Scraping the skin
Wednesday(off)
Thursday Day 2: Softening using the fat tanning method
Friday Day 3**: Smoking - The smoking stage will not likely require all students to be present the whole day. Bring another craft to work on while the skins are in their final step. **It may be possible for students to take an additional ½ day class on Friday in either the morning or evening….students will smoke in groups. You aren reach out to us to discuss it or wait to book a last minute workshop at the festival for Friday =)
