Karel Hekrle started carving more than 10 years ago to learn to make things in a "green way" by hand. The first festival in England where he could see works of experienced green woodworkers from many countries revealed making woodenware as a path to take along his carpentry practice. Over the time it's evolved into a real passion and now he teaches and makes things for living too.
His most frequently used tool is the axe and you can see it in the work. Many woodcarvings, especially kuksas and bowls, by him have distictive patterns. For spoons, scoops and other utensils he follows forms answering functionality and the beauty of wood speaking through rustic yet fine finish in a rather imaginative carving style.
His motivation to further hone the woodworking skills and share experiences comes from the fact he still feels like a student and the belief that many more people can make living with a greater respect for nature and the joy of crafting things by hand makes it much easier.
Karel's courses are available in English & Czech
