In Search of Wood Culture

by Jarrod Dahl

Thursday 14th, After Dinner

The late Japanese philosopher and founder of the Mingei Folk Craft Movement, Yanagi Sōetsu once said, “We do not admire work because of the past, but because of it’s enduring present.” This idea has been the underlying focus in Jarrod’s current work designing and producing domestic woodenware̶cups, bowls and utensils in his shop in Northern Wisconsin. It has guided his research into the depths of the internet to study thousands of images within digital archives, to museum collections in Sweden where woodenware production thrived for hundreds of years, to York, England where he studied turned objects from the Viking era, and most recently to experience living wood turning traditions in Japan. Join Jarrod as he shares his journey, thoughts and ideas about craft, and how he finds inspiration within the context of making traditional craft objects in our modern times. This talk will include a slideshow plus a display of spoons from many makers, lacquerware from Japan, and other unique woodenware objects.
